A style guide template that is already half written

Thirteen sections of decisions, pre-filled with the defaults most content teams end up choosing: voice, tone by situation, readability targets per content type, grammar, formatting, terminology, inclusive language, and the AI rules every team now needs. Fill the brackets, delete the guidance, ship it.

The Editorial Style Guide Template: cover
01
What is inside

Built for the work, not the feed.

Content leads, marketing managers, agencies and small-business owners who publish writing from more than one person and want it to sound like one company.

01

Voice in a table, not an adjective

We are / we are not. Three principles with what each looks like and what it is not. Five sliders a writer can self-check against.

02

Tone by situation, with an example line

Onboarding, errors, outages, marketing, support, social, billing, bad news. The line teaches more than the label.

03

Readability standards per content type

Grade level, sentence length, paragraph length and passive-voice limit for blogs, landing pages, help articles, emails, social, release notes and UI text. Pre-filled from published guidance.

04

Grammar and formatting decided

Nineteen decisions (spelling, Oxford comma, numbers, dates, headings, links, images, CTAs) with sensible defaults. Change the ones that do not fit.

05

AI usage rules

Allowed, not allowed, the human review standard, the machine tells to remove, and a disclosure rule you can actually keep.

06

The Quick Card and a finished example

One page for freelancers and new hires, and an excerpt from a finished guide for a fictional company so you can see the level of detail that works.

02
Look inside

These are the actual pages you get.

Screenshots are taken from the file itself, not a mock-up. What you see here is what lands in your inbox.

03
How to use it

Three steps, then it is yours.

  1. 1Decide the three things that matter first: voice (section 3), readability targets (6), AI rules (11).
  2. 2Fill every [bracket] and delete the grey guidance boxes.
  3. 3Give the Quick Card to every freelancer with every brief.

Questions

Before you download

01Does it work in Google Docs or Notion?

Yes. Upload the DOCX to Google Docs or import it into Notion. Both keep the tables and the fill-in brackets.

02Is it only for marketing teams?

It is written for any team that publishes: marketing, docs, support, founders. The content-type table and the terminology section are where you make it yours.

03Why are the AI rules inside a style guide?

Because that is where writers look. A separate policy nobody reads changes nothing. If you need the full policy with legal clauses, the AI Use Policy template below is its companion.
